So we need a pay rise which is not just above inflation, but has a sufficient buffer above inflation to protect our real incomes against the wild fluctuations that are coming our way.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0pt; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list 36.0pt;\"><b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Comic Sans MS';\">Our bills<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Comic Sans MS';\"> have gone up and are due to go up even more. FUEL Average household bill rose by <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\">\u00a3381 to \u00a31,293<\/b> last year. FOOD Prices rose by <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\">11%<\/b> last year[MSN Money] COUNCIL TAX Bills could rise by <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\">3.5%<\/b> on average [Local Government Association] <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0pt; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list 36.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Comic Sans MS';\">Government measures of inflation (CPI and RPI) systematically under-estimate real price inflation as experienced by working people. The highest price rises are for essentials such as food and utilities, and we spend much more of our income on these things than higher earners. <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0pt; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list 36.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Comic Sans MS';\">The demands on our wages are not being \u2018moderated\u2019 because of the recession.<b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\"> Landlords are not saying <\/b>\u201cI&#8217;ll let you off your rent this month, what with the economic crisis\u201d! <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0pt; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list 36.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Comic Sans MS';\">A low pay rise would have real and distressing consequences for us. Local Government workers would\/could face <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\">stress, home repossessions, debts,<\/b> and will struggle to support ourselves and our families. <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0pt; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list 36.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Comic Sans MS';\">If the government <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\">can afford billions <\/b>of pounds to bail out the banks, then it can afford to pay public service workers such as ourselves a decent wage rise.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0pt; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list 36.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Comic Sans MS';\"><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>The Gordon Brown\/ Government policy is to stimulate an economic revival. They want us to spend more. To do that, <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\">we need more money.<\/b> Lower pay rises will work against this policy<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0pt; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list 36.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Comic Sans MS';\">Self-sacrifice on our part <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\">will not save a single job<\/b> in local government or any other industry.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>10 good reasons why Barnet local government staff should have a pay rise. \u00a0 Because we deserve it.
