{"id":233,"date":"2009-09-11T09:43:25","date_gmt":"2009-09-11T08:43:25","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2016-05-06T11:27:27","modified_gmt":"2016-05-06T10:27:27","slug":"a-call-to-arms-or-alms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.barnetunison.me.uk\/wp\/2009\/09\/11\/a-call-to-arms-or-alms\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cA call to arms or alms?\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">UNISON have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unison.org.uk\/asppresspack\/pressrelease_view.asp?id=1563\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">announced<\/span><\/span><\/a> that after joint trade union consultation the members of all the main trade unions have voted to accept 1% National pay offer. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">It is clear from the media circus that politicians across the mainstream parties are queuing up to show how they would cut public sector spending if they were elected to run the government. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">The vote to accept 1% is a critical moment\u00a0for public sector trade unions. They need to quickly\u00a0\u00a0develop a <strong>coordinated, joined up<\/strong> strategy to defend public services in a way that members can feel confident that their leaders really means business.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><o:p>\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">Our members and members of other trade unions need strong leadership, it needs to go beyond rhetoric and sound bites. Members need to be inspired, they need to believe that they can make a difference.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000; font-family: Arial; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB; mso-fareast-language: EN-GB; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA;\">White House chief of staff Rahm<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1yeA_kHHLow\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><span style=\"mso-bookmark: OLE_LINK1;\"><span style=\"mso-bookmark: OLE_LINK2;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">Emanuel<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"mso-bookmark: OLE_LINK1;\"><span style=\"mso-bookmark: OLE_LINK2;\"><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"mso-bookmark: OLE_LINK1;\"><span style=\"mso-bookmark: OLE_LINK2;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"> said to President Obama <\/span><\/span><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1yeA_kHHLow\"><\/a><span style=\"mso-bookmark: OLE_LINK1;\"><span style=\"mso-bookmark: OLE_LINK2;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">to <strong><em>\u2018never let a good crisis go to waste<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><strong><em>.\u2019<\/em><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><o:p><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">I believe the same applies to the trade union movement. We need change. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">The change has got to come from our members and our stewards, they are the key to the future of trade unionism in the next decade.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">The government is committed to breaking up public services. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/commentisfree\/2009\/sep\/02\/response-barnet-council-budget-airline\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Easy<\/span><\/span><\/a> Council is not a Barnet only concept, it is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.localleadership.gov.uk\/docs\/TotalPlaceWeb.pdf\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">government <\/span><\/span><\/a>policy to encourage the move from a provider to a commissioner. This change will gather momentum if we don\u2019t stand up and fight. There are those who prefer appeasement on the basis that people are not prepared to fight.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">I point to positive reaction of the British public to the attacks on our NHS from right wing fundamentalists in the <st1:place w:st=\"on\"><st1:country-region w:st=\"on\">USA<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place> (what planet are these people from?)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">Next week sees the start of\u00a0TUC conference. In my day it marked the beginning of televised politics, the mainstream party conferences\u00a0would follow and we would watch and listen to the speeches. Nowadays it hardly raises a mention in the media.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">This <strong><em>non engagement<\/em><\/strong> is a \u2018<strong>wake up call\u2019<\/strong> for the trade union movement. Potential members of trade unions need to be convinced of the need to belong to a trade union. The hard won terms &amp; conditions that people take for granted were not handed over willingly. They were hard fought, there were casualties. We need to show these potential members why we need to fight and why they need to be part of the fight.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><o:p>\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">I would ask members to note Motion 49 entitled \u2018Defending public services\u2019 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">going to TUC <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tuc.org.uk\/congress\/tuc-16887-f0.pdf\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">conference <\/span><\/span><\/a>from the PCS which I am hoping will be adopted. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">It opens with <o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><strong>\u201cCongress rejects the notion that the solution to the economic crisis, and the resulting national debt, must be found in public spending cuts which damage services, freeze public sector pay, increase privatisation, or cut pensions and benefits.
